This case study shed light on the negative impact on human rights and the environment in the process of decarbonization. To accelerate decarbonization, the demand for lithium, cobalt and nickel, which are used in batteries of transportation, is rapidly increasing but there is a concern that this stream might harm the environment and life around the mines. We conducted field research in Sorowako mine in Indonesia and found that mining is violating rights of indigenous people and local communities, including the right to their farms, and access to sanitary water. However, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd is investing in the local mining companies of Sorowako mine and conducting procurement of minerals extracted from the mine. Additionally, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd is financially supported by Japanese mega banks including SMBC. Therefore, the Japanese mega banks are required to establish policies to prevent environmental destruction and human rights violations and implement the policies steadily.
