Case Study on Workers’ Rights in the Ride Sharing Industry in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam

This case study looked at the issue of ride sharing in Asia. Across Asia, ride-sharing apps have transformed transport for consumers who can request a ride to their desired destination with just a couple of taps on the app. But workers face economic and social exclusion driven by the rapid expansion of informal employment without adequate social security, contrary to the International Labour Organization (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets The industry has been supported by massive investments and the single large shareholder is the SoftBank Vision Fund, managed by the SoftBank Group of Japan. Two financial flows support the investments by the SoftBank Group. One is a $45 billion investment from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund and other financial flows that allows SoftBank Group to make risky investments is lending by domestic and foreign financial institutions, including Mizuho Bank. These institutions should expand the scope of their human rights policies before the violation happens in order to protect the livelihoods and rights of workers in Asia.
